I just did my job, says RPF constable Sivaji

RPF constable K Sivaji came in for appreciation from around the country, even winning a bravery medal and Rs 1 lakh from the Railway Ministry, for rescuing a woman from a rapist on a moving train. But unfazed by the attention he has been garnering ever since, Sivaji says he was just doing his job

What was your first thought when you witnessed it?

What would we think when we see one our family members in such a situation? My thought was just the same — I have to stop it and rescue her. It was a moving train and if he had pushed me forcefully enough, I might have fallen off. But I am thinking of all these now, not back then.

Did you think your courageous act would be rewarded?

No. I thought I just did my job. In fact, I went to sleep soon after the woman was admitted to the hospital. Next morning, the department summoned me to Chennai Central. I was clueless when I reached there in plain clothes and did not expect the media to be present there.

Did you meet the woman after that?

No. I was told that she was unconscious. So I didn’t meet her.
