CHENNAI: A 33-year-old man, a history-sheeter, was hacked to death in public view by a gang near Thiruvanmiyur on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Saravanan alias ‘Olai’ Saravanan, a history-sheeter, who has several pending cases against him. Police said that Saravanan was a resident of Malligaipoo Nagar.

On Monday evening, Saravanan was riding his two-wheeler near a government school in Thiruvanmiyur when a gang intercepted him.

Before Saravanan could flee, the gang chased him and hacked him with weapons. Police rushed to the scene on information and secured Saravanan, who was in a pool of blood. He was moved to a government hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Police said that there was an attempt to kill Saravanan earlier in 2017 and he had a close shave then. Preliminary investigations revealed that Saravanan has several cases against him, including attempt to murder cases. Police suspect a revenge attack to be the motive behind the murder.

Earlier this year, the Madras High Court had commuted a ten-year imprisonment on him given by a trial court in 2020 to two years in an attempt to murder case after which Saravanan got released from Jail, police sources said.
