The incident came to the light only after the CCTV grab of the incident went viral on social media. Police sources said Jayanthi (44), an Inspector with the Prohibition Enforcement Wing, was staying in the Melakottaiyur police quarters near Vandalur along with her family.

Their neighbour, retired Sub Inspector Pandian, was staying along with his son Venkatesan, a gym instructor, and daughter-in-law Jayashree (33). Police said both the families often used to quarrel and there was no contact between them.

Three days ago, while disposing of the garbage in the bin, a quarrel broke out between Jayanthi and Jayashree and soon it turned violent and Jayashree was allegedly assaulted by the former.

After hearing about the incident, Venkatesan went to Jayanthi’s house along with Jayashree and assaulted her. The neighbours who rushed to the spot rescued Jayanthi and as she suffered injuries, rushed her to a private hospital nearby.

Both Jayanthi and Jayashree filed a complaint with the Thazhambur police and police. After registering a case, police arrested Venkatesan. Further inquiry is on.
