CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) to maintain infrastructure and extend improved civic services in the Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates.

According to an official press release document, the MoU aims to bring these industrial estates on par with other parts of the city in terms of civic amenities. The Greater Chennai Corporation will take up the maintenance of essential infrastructure such as roads, stormwater drains, waterways, streetlights, bridges, community halls, parks, ponds, playgrounds, gymnasiums, schools, and hospitals, besides ensuring effective delivery of educational and medical services.

The initiative is in line with the State government’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure facilities in areas witnessing rapid industrial growth. Officials said the Greater Chennai Corporation has been continuously upgrading civic infrastructure across the city to support industrial development and improve service delivery.

The Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates play a vital role in Chennai’s industrial ecosystem, housing several manufacturing units and other industries and providing employment to lakhs of workers.

The Ambattur Industrial Estate, developed by SIDCO, spans 1,167 acres, while the Guindy Industrial Estate covers 404.08 acres. As per data shared by officials, Ambattur has 128 roads with a total length of 41.38 km, 1,558 streetlights, eight high-mast lights and 84 km of stormwater drains, with around 40 tonnes of solid waste collected daily. Guindy has 82 roads extending 15.28 km, 344 streetlights, two high-mast lights and 23.5 km of stormwater drains, with about 20 tonnes of solid waste generated per day.

With the signing of the MoU, The Greater Chennai Corporation will now be responsible for maintaining infrastructure and providing enhanced civic services in both the Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates, the document added.
