CHENNAI: In a two day special drive against drugs, the Greater Chennai Police arrested 105 accused across the city and seized over 25 kg of ganja and other narcotic substances.
The city police's Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) has been active for the last 18 months and has been untangling the synthetic drug peddling network in the city.
As part of the special drive, vigil across the city was amplified. The police said that in 57 cases registered, 105 persons were arrested. This resulted in seizure of 26 kg of ganja and 1888 painkiller tablets.
Last week, the city police had arrested a five-member gang from Maharashtra who camped in the city in possession of OG ganja worth several lakhs to sell to distributors. The gang told investigators that they sourced the OG ganja from their contact in Bengaluru who claimed to have got it from Hong Kong.
"In several cases, the accused had sourced the drugs from other states. Painkillers are mostly sourced online and sent through couriers. We have been frequently meeting the pharmacy owners and appealed to them to not sell painkiller tablets," a police officer said.
