Greater Chennai Corporation conducts disaster management training for transgender community

The Stormwater Drain department organised the training under a project supported by the Asian Development Bank. It focused on helping participants understand disaster risks, especially flooding, and how to respond during emergencies.

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) conducted a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) training programme for members of the transgender community at the Ripon Building campus on Wednesday, as part of the Chennai-Kosasthalaiyar Basin Integrated Urban Flood Management Project.

Sessions covered basic DRR concepts, identification and support of vulnerable groups during disasters, emergency helpline numbers, locations of relief shelters, and standard operating procedures to be followed during floods and other emergencies. Practical preparedness, response and recovery measures were also discussed.

Experts from the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority conducted discussions and practical exercises. Similar disaster preparedness programmes have earlier been conducted for residents of flood-prone areas and other vulnerable groups in the city.

Officials said the programme, aimed at ensuring that disaster preparedness efforts include vulnerable communities and equip them with information that can help protect themselves and assist others during emergencies.
