Gold, foreign currency worth Rs 1.11 crore seized, 1 arrested

The Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 1 crore and foreign currencies worth Rs 10.8 lakh and arrested a passenger who arrived from Colombo at the airport here.

According to sources, following a tip-off, the officials detained four passengers — Shahul Hameed Badhusha (37), Yasar Arabath (20), Azarudeen (34) of Ramanathapuram and Usuf Moulana (42) of Chennai — from Colombo. Following a search, the officials found one of them has hidden 12 rolls — containing currency and gold —in his rectum, and arrested him.


In another incident, the officials intercepted Ramanathan (27) of Ramanathapuram, when he was proceeding for the security check to board a Bangkok flight.


On search, the officials recovered Rs 10.83 lakh worth Euros, Thai Baht, Malaysian ringgit and US Dollars from his hand baggage and trouser pockets.


In the third incident, Kalandaar Irfan (21) of Chennai and Anjana Niraj Nelson (37) of Sri Lanka were arrested with Rs 23.2 lakh worth gold. Similarly, on Friday, 491 grams of gold was recovered from Warnakulasuriya Maria Chirshanthi (53), who arrived fromColombo.
