CHENNAI: A giant sinkhole on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) near the U-shaped flyover near Indra Nagar MRTS railway station disrupted traffic movement on Saturday.

In a similar incident on the same stretch seven months ago, five occupants in a car had a close shave after the car went into the eight feet deep sinkhole while being halted due to traffic.

No persons were affected in the recent incident as authorities had found out a leakage on the sewer line on Friday night and took precautionary measures.

An official with the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) said, “On Friday night, we found out a leakage in the sewer line. We anticipated this (sinkhole) and informed the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board department officials to replace the damaged 2.2 mm diameter pipe. The sewer pipeline works are expected to be completed by Sunday"

Greater Chennai Traffic Police have barricaded the area and have urged motorists to drive cautiously.
