According to sources, the Tasmac outlets in the city, expecting further easing of lockdown rules and permission to open liquor shops in the coming days, have started up cleaning works of the bars which are attached to the outlets. On Sunday, Saravanan (30), who is working in a bar in Old Perungalathur, was cleaning the bar at around 1.30 pm when four men, who came on two bikes, barged in and demanded liquor from Saravanan.

Police said that though Saravanan expressed his helplessness, saying there are no bottles available in the bar and the sales will resume only after the bar is opened, the foursome picked up a quarrel with Saravanan.

After one of them took out a knife and began to attack him, Saravanan took to his heels. But the gang chased and attacked Saravanan. After they got on to their two-wheelers and sped away, the onlookers rushed Saravanan to a nearby private hospital and got him admitted there. Peerkankaranai police have booked a case and are investigating.
