The 61-year-old politician, presently the MLA representing Saidapet constituency, has a diabetic history of 25 years. But that did not stop him from running for four hours and eight minutes on his terrace to set the record, which, he believes, would inspire his party cadres and followers stay positive with exercises during this lockdown period.

He said he did the feat in front of three-night vision cameras installed by Asia Book of Records. For the next few weeks, staying positive, social distancing and exercise should be the key mantra for all Chennaiites, he said in a chat with DT Next.

“I started the warmup around 3.30 am on Thursday and started running by 4 am. By around 7 am, I was sweating a lot due to the Chennai heat but managed to complete the task by 8 am,” said the south Chennai DMK district secretary, who had also formed a South Chennai Runners Club comprising youngsters from the neighbourhood.

“Daily exercise is important for all the people. Now my body requires two to three hours of daily exercise with some basic yoga. The fitness has helped me a lot during the COVID relief works. Besides, I spend an hour reading newspapers and books. Some of my party workers complain of boredom and say there is no space to exercise. All you need is a small room to stay fit. This is the second time I am entering the Asia Book of Records. The previous event was two years ago when I completed 75 full marathons. My next target is to complete 100 marathons,” he said.

The World Records University had conferred an honorary doctorate on Subramanian last year for completing 75 marathons within three years.
