Filmmaker held for ‘derogatory’ remarks against Hindu gods

Film director Velu Prabhakaran was arrested by sleuths from Chennai Central Crime Branch on Friday for his alleged derogatory speech on Hindu religion and popular devotional song Kandha Sashti Kavasam.

Velu Prabhakaran is known for making movies with controversial themes, often highlighting atheism.

The Cyber Crime sleuths said that the filmmaker-cum-cinematographer-cum-actor Velu Prabhakaran was arrested for his allegedly “provocative” speech on a web portal.

He was arrested from his residence in Maduravoyal by a team of police personnel following a complaint from one KS Sivaji, of Bharat Munnani, Korukkupet. The complainant alleged that Velu Prabhakaran had made a defamatory speech against popular Kandha Sashti Kavasam, Hindu religion and Hindus on a web portal.

He was arrested under the IPC Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot); 153 A(1)(a)(Promoting enmity between different groups); 295(A)(Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings); and 505(1)(b) (makes, publishes or circulates any statement with intent to cause fear or alarm among the public).
