“Fasting during Ramzan can be dangerous or may result in various problems for the people fasting if their dietary restrictions disturb the overall equilibrium of the body,” said Dr Thomas P, an endocrinologist.
As each individual is different, it is important for each of them to consult a doctor before beginning the fast, said the doctor.
“Depending on the individual, fasting without using insulin can result in high blood sugars or in diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious diabetes complication caused by blood build-up of acids called ketones). Also, dehydration is another aspect which should be taken seriously during the fast,” added Dr Thomas.
To add to this, Dr Senthil K, a diabetologist said, “Monitoring the sugar and BP levels during the course of the fast is also important.” He added that doctors may suggest a change in the medication to be administered during Ramzan.
Stressing on various risks that may be involved while fasting, Dr Senthil, said, “The risk of blood glucose levels going too low is maximum in people consuming insulin or certain diabetes pills. It is therefore important that a diabetes patient limits physical activity during fasting hours.”
“While low blood glucose levels may happen during the day, after the fast is broken, there is a greater risk to overeat. A diabetic must therefore watch out what he eats,” the doctor said. He also stressed on the need to stay hydrated. “Aim to drink sugar free and caffeine free drinks frequently throughout the evening and before dawn,” said Dr Senthil.
