Duo held for smuggling ganja in Ponneri

A police team from Sholavaram caught two men who were smuggling ganja from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on a two-wheeler. The police seized two kg contraband from them.

The accused were identified as Rafiq (25) and Mukilan (22) of Kovilambakkam near Medavakkam, officials said. On Tuesday morning, the police team from Sholavaram station was involved in vehicle checking on Chennai-Kolkata National Highway. The officials spotted the duo on bike following suspicion and intercepted them.

During the questioning, the men admitted that they bought ganja in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh to sell in small quantities in Chennai. The contraband was seized from them and the duo was remanded in judicial custody. Meanwhile, the Avadi Tank Factory police arrested a grocery shop owner for selling gutkha and seized 400 kg of the banned products worth Rs 3 lakh. The accused, I Arumugsamy of Veerapuram, has been arrested and further investigation is on.
