CHENNAI: The city police secured a man with disability for issuing a hoax bomb threat to the Chief Minister’s residence. Probe revealed that he is a serial offender and had been arrested for a similar offence earlier.

However, considering his family situation, he was warned and let off, police sources said. The secured person was identified as Iyappan (36) from Tiruporur. He runs a mobile phone accessories store.

On Saturday, Iyappan called the police control room and issued a hoax bomb threat to CM Stalin’s residence and cut the call. After the call was declared a hoax, police traced the call and apprehended Iyappan, who told the police that he had made the call under the influence of alcohol.

Probe revealed that he had earlier been arrested in 2020 and 2021 for issuing similar threats to major locations, including the CM’s residence, Koyambedu bus terminus, Egmore railway station, and Chennai airport. The police said that considering that he had a family with two school kids, police released him on station bail with a stern warning.
