According a district PEW official, the production of arrack has grown manifold after Tasmac shops were closed because of the lockdown. Many were trying to sneak it in to Tiruvallur through border villages.

“Some with experience have been doing it professionally, while many others wanted to brew alcohol in their own way. After cracking down on arrack production in Tiruvallur, we noticed scores of people were camped near the Andhra border,” the official noted.

Based on a tip off, a PEW team decided to monitor the border area near Devalapuram checkpost in Tiruttani using a drone. From the visuals it beamed, officials spotted four men on two motorbikes trying enter TN with huge bags. When the drone went near them, they abandoned the vehicle and fled towards Andhra, but in vain.
