Disabled-friendly facilities on the Marina to stay for another week

Owing to the positive response from the persons with disabilities, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to extend facilities for the differently-abled on the Marina by a week.

Speaking at the ‘Marina for all’ event organised by the Greater Chennai Corporation on Tuesday, Commissioner G Prakash said that differently abled people enjoyed the facilities provided by the civic body. “The special equipment and facilities will be there for next week,” he said.


On the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons on Tuesday, the civic body had created temporary pathways on Marina sands stretching for 225 metres into the beach so that people with disabilities can reach shoreline using special wheelchairs. “The civic body had already procured four wheelchairs worth Rs 8.8 lakh under Swedesh Darshan scheme,” said the Commissioner. The Chennai Corporation had proposed to lay permanent pathways for disabled people in Marina and Elliot’s beaches, but the projects have gotten delayed owing to CRZ clearance issues and opposition from locals.
