Customs seizes gold worth Rs 66.5 lakh at city airport

Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 66.5 lakh at Chennai airport on Monday.

Officials, who were checking the passengers arrived from Dubai, intercepted Shake Abdullah (28) of Ramanathapuram. On personal search, they recovered four bundles of gold paste hidden in his rectum. On extraction, the gold weighed about 486 grams and it was worth Rs 20.4 lakh.


In the second incident, officials intercepted Abdul Razzak (40) of Cuddalore, Inhanullah (33) and Sintha (49) from Ramanthapuram, who arrived from Colombo on Sunday. On personal search, the officials recovered 10 bundles of gold paste from their rectums. On extraction, the gold weighed about 1.07 kg. Further, two gold cut bits weighing 24 grams was recovered from one of their pockets. Totally 1.9 kg of gold worth Rs 46.10 lakh was seized and the customs. All of the accused were detained.


On Sunday morning, officials seized 348 grams of gold worth Rs 14.6 lakh and cigarettes worth Rs 4.70 lakh from Musthafa (37) of Thanjavur and Sikkander (45) of Chennai, who arrived from Dubai. Sikander was found hiding Gudang Garam cigarettes.
