Corporation unplugs water-logged streets

With heavy rains lashing the city over the last two days, the Greater Chennai Corporation has received 196 complaints, regarding waterlogging, out of which 110 have already been addressed

The Corporation had deployed lorries, super sucker machines and 112 motor pumps, to expel water from low-lying areas. Forty six trees, which were uprooted, have been removed by the staff. A Corporation official said that 12 contingents of disaster management force, with six teams each from the national and state forces have been kept on standby for any rescue work. “12 boats have been arranged in case of any flood-like situation. 

“Detachment of electricity lines in low-lying areas is being done to relieve public from danger of electrocution. A group of senior IAS officers were deployed to oversee the rain-related works carried out in each zone,” said the source. 

While the rains are expected to reduce by Wednesday, the Corporation is leaving nothing to chance. The official source added, “Seventeen relief camps have been prepared with all facilities, in case people have to be evacuated from low lying areas.” 

Provisions to prepare food for those displaced have been made from the Amma canteens, which have been geared up to supply meals. Primary Healthcare Centres and clinics across the city are equipped to deal with outbreak of diseases, if any.
