Corpn hands over Rs 68 lakh for police to install CCTVs

The Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday handed over a cheque for Rs 68.33 lakh to the city police Commissioner to install CCTV cameras on the roads to enhance public security.

The fund was given to the police as part of its share from the second phase of the auctioning of 3,096 abandoned vehicles parked on the roadside in the city. The vehicles were auctioned for a total amount of Rs 91.11 lakh and 75 per cent of it was given to the police as its share. Corporation commissioner K Prakash handed over the cheque to the Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan on Monday, an official release from the civic body said.


The abandoned two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers on the road side, pavements and interior streets were being seized by the Corporation and the city police since 2018 to ease movement of vehicles and hindrance to public.


The vehicles were being removed only after the public warning given in this regard. In the first phase, the city police seized 7,875 vehicles and handed it over to the civic body.


After the due procedure, the abandoned vehicles were sold through auctioning. The city Corporation collected Rs 2.14 crore through auctioning and Rs 1.6 crore was given to the police as its share to purchase and install CCTV cameras to enhance the security in the civic body limits.


The release said that since 2018, as many as 10,954 abandoned vehicles were removed and auctioned for Rs 3.05 crore. “Of the money raised through auctioning, Rs 2.28 crore was paid to the city police for installing CCTV cameras in the city,” it said.
