CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday announced that a statue of Omandur Ramasamy would be installed at the Omandurar Government Medical College campus, the erstwhile new Assembly complex planned by M Karunannidhi but junked by rival J Jayalalithaa.

Recalling his legacy, the government noted that former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had established a Manimandapam in honour of O Ramasamy at his birthplace, Omandur, in Villupuram district. In Chennai, the Government Estate was named after him during his centenary celebrations, which the former Chief Minister constructed into the Assembly complex, which was turned into a hospital by AIADMK Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Omandur Ramasamy began his political life as a freedom fighter and was a committed follower of Gandhian principles. He was also influenced by the ideals of Vallalar and Periyar. Even after stepping down as Chief Minister, he chose to live as a farmer, the statement said.
