The Chennai airport domestic terminal will be a ‘silent zone’ from May 1 as the authorities have decided to do away with all sorts of announcements through the public announcement system.

Sources said this decision was taken after consensus from the passengers as a majority of them felt that frequent announcement was causing nuisance. Airport sources said all information regarding boarding, flight timing, delays and other information would be communicated to the passengers via SMS. Only last minute changes at the boarding gate, due to technical reasons would be announced through the announcement system from May 1.

Airport officials said the differently-abled passengers, who are not able to read and understand SMS messages, would be assisted by the airline officials. “Such passengers will get one-to-one care from the airline staff. Already, Delhi and Mumbai domestic airports have been declared silent airports and we are following suit,” Chennai airport PRO said.
