CISF man fatally shoots himself on moving bus in Chennai

Preliminary investigations suggested that Ravi Kiran had dozed off with the muzzle of the INSAS rifle below his neck when the weapon fired allegedly after hitting a bump on the road.

CHENNAI: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, Ravi Kiran (37), died after he accidentally fired his weapon while on a moving bus on Sunday morning while returning home after finishing night duty at IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research) in Kalpakkam, near Chennai.

According to sources, Ravi Kiran was on night duty on Saturday and was returning to his quarters on Sunday morning in a contract bus along with 18 other CISF personnel when he suddenly pulled out his INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle and shot himself in the neck.

Preliminary investigations suggested that Ravi Kiran had dozed off with the muzzle of the INSAS rifle below his neck when the weapon fired allegedly after hitting a bump on the road.

His colleagues were woken up by the gunshot and startled to see Ravi Kiran with fatal injuries. The 37-year-old was rushed to the Atomic Power Station Hospital in Kalpakkam, where he was declared as brought dead.

The Kalpakkam police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. The CISF and Atomic Power Station authorities are also conducting an inquiry into the incident. Police said that the deceased is a native of Karnataka and his family members were informed of the incident.
