CHENNAI: Parking congestion around the Gopalapuram Corporation playground has become a regular issue, with vehicles parked along Conron Smith Road, reducing road width and affecting traffic flow, particularly on weekends.

Visitors say the playground earlier had parking within its premises when it functioned as a larger open ground.

However, following the inauguration of a boxing stadium by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, nearly one-third of the space is no longer available, pushing vehicles to park outside. The lack of space leads to haphazard parking which has narrowed the already tight two-lane Conron Smith Road, leading to congestion during peak hours. Buses and other vehicles are often forced to slow down or halt, making the stretch difficult to commute through in the mornings.

Pedestrian movement has also been affected, with little space left for people to walk safely. Children and youngsters visiting the playground to play, cycle or meet friends are frequently seen navigating dangerously.

Visitors note that the playground has seen increased footfall after the ground near Sathyam cinema became largely inaccessible due to Metro Rail works. As a result, the Gopalapuram playground, along with Alphonsa ground, now caters to residents from Triplicane, Royapettah, Lighthouse and Mylapore.

“Parking has become a bigger problem. Around 1,000 people come here during weekends. It creates congestion and safety issues,” said Nandhagopal, who travels from Royapettah. “Space is available around the SDAT stadium. Regulated parking or alternative arrangements have to be made soon to prevent road obstruction.”
