Chennai: Over 100 stage stir seeking swift action in gold scam case

CHENNAI: Over 100 people who lost money in a loan scam involving city-based Ruby Jewellery gathered near the Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore on Monday and staged a protest, demanding recovery of the jewellery they invested in the firm.

In 2019, thousands of people approached the city police, alleging that the owner of the firm did not return the gold jewellery that they had pledged, shut the shop and fled. Eventually, the case was transferred to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and five persons were arrested.


On Monday, hundreds of protestors, including women, raised slogans, demanding that the chargesheet be filed soon and that the gold be recovered and returned to the owners

Several protesters said they struggled for justice for the past seven years and that at least 10 victims died due to health complications and mental stress caused by the prolonged delay in the case.


The protestors also urged the Tamil Nadu government and Chief Minister MK Stalin to intervene and ensure the legal procedures are expedited.
