Chennai: Intruders decamp with 2 kg of silver ornaments from temple

The police team that visited the spot have registered a case and is browsing the CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify the intruders.

CHENNAI: Unidentified intruders decamped with 2 kg of silver ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh from Naya Tirupati Perumal Temple in Maduranthagam on Wednesday.

Located in Chitravadi village on the Maduranthagam-Pavunjur Road, the temple is known for conducting daily special abhishekams, poojas, and festivals in a grand manner.

The temple priest resides within the premises.

Separate security personnel are usually on duty during both day and night for the temple’s protection.

Police said two unidentified men entered the temple around midnight and broke the locks of the doors, gained entry, and stole silver crowns from the idols of Perumal, Sridevi and Bhoodevi, along with a silver chain from Perumal and other pooja articles.

In total, around 2 kg of silver items were stolen.

On Wednesday morning, when the priest who came to open the temple, he was shocked to notice the theft and alerted the Chithamur police station.
