Since March, the 16 maternity hospitals under the civic body have performed 4,431 deliveries, including 861 in August alone – the highest during the period – 765 in June and 760 in July. The previous highest was in May when the civic body hospitals had 846 deliveries. There were 550 deliveries in March and 649 in April.

Among the 16 hospitals, the highest number of deliveries were recorded at the urban community health centre in Pulianthope with 565 deliveries since March.

Amid COVID-19, the civic body had dedicated three maternity hospitals exclusively for treating pregnant women infected by the virus. The Corporation is conducting COVID-19 tests on the pregnant women who are due for labour in 15 days.

“Despite the pandemic, we have not suspended regular medical care, including maternity care and outpatient treatment, at our urban primary centres and community centres,” an official said.
