The road, which serves as an important connectivity route in the locality, is used daily by thousands of vehicles.

Residents say Sterling Road was already in poor condition due to long-standing sewage leaks. However, the recent spell of rain has worsened the situation, enlarging potholes and making the stretch extremely difficult to navigate. In several places, potholes are reportedly nearly half a foot deep, increasing the risk of skidding and accidents.

Residents say Sterling Road was already in poor condition due to long-standing sewage leaks, and the recent rain has made it worse

Abi, a daily bike rider, told DD Next that he has been using Sterling Road to go to his office for the past six years. “Most of the time, this road has been in a damaged condition. But over the past week, it has become much worse. I nearly lost control of my bike because some potholes are very deep, making it extremely difficult to ride,” he said.

Pedestrians and residents have also raised serious concerns. Kanmani, a resident of the area, said the road was once in good condition but has deteriorated significantly in recent years. “Sewage water often stagnates here, causing foul smells. Vehicles splash the stagnant sewage water on pedestrians, creating health and hygiene issues. The Greater Chennai Corporation must take immediate action,” she urged.

With several damaged roads across Chennai being re-laid ahead of the 2026 elections, residents of Nungambakkam have appealed to the civic body to urgently re-lay Sterling Road and restore safe commuting conditions.
