CHENNAI: Two persons -- a Bangladeshi and a Sri Lankan -- have been arrested by the Chennai police's fake passport wing for availing an Indian passport by concealing their nationality.
The fake passport wing of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested the accused based on a complaint from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) after their passports were flagged at the Chennai Airport when they attempted to travel abroad.
The arrested persons were identified as Mohammed Al Ameen (31) and Priyadarshini Sadasivam (26). They were detained at the airport on December 16 and December 17, respectively, police said.
A probe revealed that Al Ameen, a Bangladesh national, had crossed the border in 2011 and subsequently procured Aadhaar and other identity documents in the name of Al Ameen Mandal, which he used to obtain an Indian passport under the same name. Police said that he had attempted to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) when he was detained.
The Sri Lankan national, Priyadarshini, entered India on a tourist visa in 2024 and married a man from Trichy, procuring an Aadhaar card and other documents in the process, which she used to obtain an Indian passport. She was trying to travel to Sri Lanka, police said.
