“Every night, sanitary workers burn the waste, resulting in smoke emanating from it throughout the day. Nearly 800 metres surrounding it is affected, and many residents have developed asthma,” said Arun Bhagat C, a resident of Perungalathur. “Even the waste from the containment zone is also burned here,” he alleged.

“Recently, a resident shifted because she developed some lung infection due to the constant smoke from that area.

My wife and three-year-old child have developed breathing difficulty. While pollution levels dipped in the city owing to the lockdown, the opposite is happening here,” said Nandhagopal R, another resident.

Residents said they have been lodging at least two to three complaints every day.

The trouble they are facing is also because of the absence of a residents’ welfare association. “So we have to file complaints individually,” Bhagat added.

When contacted, the Executive Officer of Perungalathur Municipality, Gunasekar D said the garbage is dumped and burnt by Mudichur Panchayat.
