CHENNAI: Already hassled by the change in pick-up point, air passengers are further unhappy after an unannounced tariff hike for parking at Chennai airport.

The parking tariff was increased in December 2022 after the inauguration of the Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP). Now, in two years, the parking fare has further increased from Wednesday without proper announcement.

Earlier, the fare for two-wheeler parking for two hours was Rs 30, it has increased to Rs 35; it was Rs 95 for 24 hours and now increased to Rs 100.

For a car, the minimum charge was Rs 80 and has now increased to Rs 85. It was Rs 525 for 24 hours and now increased to Rs 550. Similarly, for a van, the minimum charge was Rs 315 and for 24 hours, it was Rs 1,050. Now they have increased to Rs 330 and Rs ,1100.

The minimum charge for buses and heavy vehicles has gone up from Rs 630 to Rs 660 and for 24 hours, it has increased from Rs 2,100 to Rs 2,205.

An official from the Chennai airport said when the MLCP contract was given to a private firm, the agreement itself mentioned that fares could slightly increase after two years. Hence the fare hike is based on the agreement. The official pointed out that during the inauguration, it was said fares would increase after two years.
