The hospital authorities said most of the cases were minor road accidents. The emergency units at RGGGH, Kilpauk MCH, Stanley MCH received close to 40 in-patient cases in total, which is about 60 per cent less than the number of cases received in the casualty in the hospitals in the city last year.

About 95 emergency in-patient cases were reported in government hospitals last year during New Year festivities and more than 500 patients were reported emergency at the government hospitals last year.

“RGGGH generally receives more than 100 cases on New Year’s eve and on January 1. However, due to restrictions, we only saw about 50 cases and only 20 cases required admission,” said Dr E Theranirajan, dean, RGGGH.

Kilpauk MCH received about 40 emergency cases, of which 14 cases required admission and Royapettah GGH saw 15 emergency cases, of which five were admitted.

“Most of the cases were head injuries or casualties due to road accidents. A majority of them are caused due to drunk driving or rash driving, but the curbs helped in reducing them,” said Dr P Vasanthamani, dean, Kilpauk MCH.
