5.6 kg gold recovered from aircraft toilet

Customs officers on Tuesday seized 5.6 kg of gold worth Rs 2.24 crore from the toilet of an Air India flight which arrived from Dubai.

Based on the information that gold might be smuggled in an aircraft arriving from Dubai, a team of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers rummaged the Air India flight that arrived from Dubai, a release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said. This International flight was converted into domestic flight and was to fly to Delhi.


During rummaging, four bundles wrapped in black adhesive tape were found concealed in the rear toilet of the aircraft. On cutting open the bundles, 48 gold bars of 10 tola each with foreign markings, totally weighing 5.6 kg and valued at Rs 2.24 crore, were recovered. The same were seized as unclaimed under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. Further Investigation is on.
