The GCC conducted its council meeting on Thursday and passed this resolution. Further, storm-water drainage system was one of the focal points, while the main resolutions were passed. There was also a discussion about functioning of the electric crematorium, as many councillors complained that the premises of the crematoriums were covered with bushes and vegetation.

The GCC Mayor Saidai Duraisamy chaired the meeting in the presence of Corporation Commissioner, Dr B Chandra Mohan and other officials. The Mayor also assured of necessary actions for all the grievances aired by councillors. During the meeting, the Mayor clarified the Corporation’s stand on a DTNext report dated June 29, titled ‘Manual scavenging, still open menace’. He said, “We learnt a media house possessed a photo of a person entering a manhole to carry out repairs.  I am aware the Court has ordered not to engage anyone in any manual scavenging works. But, this picture in question shows the man entering a storm-water drain. We can explain this to the Court.”

He added that storm-water drains are not manholes, which have sewage water. Meanwhile, some councillors raised concerns about the electric crematorium. The Mayor said, “The GCC has 206 such electric crematoriums and we are maintaining them properly. Works like removing bushes and vegetation are in full swing. Even basic amenities are ensured on the premises.”

The Chief Minister had ordered the GCC should provide death certificate as early as possible to the kin of deceased. It may be recalled that the GCC had passed a resolution in February to allot Rs 41.22 crore for constructing storm water drains in three zones in Chennai. Corporation staff were tasked with completing the projects within a stipulated time frame.
