CHENNAI: Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan found itself caught in a legal maze due to the delay in obtaining a censor certificate from the CBFC. After more than a month of back-and-forth, the team has finally come up with a solution to release the film.
The latest update we hear is that the new cut of Jana Nayagan is ready, and the producer, KVN Productions, will withdraw the case once the formalities are completed. The team is planning to release the film on February 20.
In December 2025, the film was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). An examining committee reviewed it, suggested a few edits, and recommended a U/A certificate.
The makers complied, expecting a routine clearance. But just as the release clock began ticking, a late objection emerged within the board, raising concerns about certain scenes and their possible social or institutional implications.
Acting on this, the CBFC chairperson referred the film to a Revising Committee, halting certification.
With the release stalled, the producers moved the Madras High Court, arguing that the delay was arbitrary and financially damaging. A single judge initially directed the CBFC to issue the certificate, but the board appealed.
A division bench set aside that order, stressing that the statutory process had to be completed properly and that the CBFC deserved a full hearing.
The producers briefly approached the Supreme Court, which declined to intervene and sent the matter back to the High Court.
Jana Nayagan is one of the most anticipated films in Tamil cinema as it marks the farewell project of actor-politician Vijay. The H Vinoth-directorial was originally meant to arrive on January 9.
