Paruthiveeran-fame Lakshmi Ammal dies at 75

MADURAI: Lakshmi Ammal, the folk singer who became popular through the film Paruthiveeran, died on Monday. She was 75.

She sang the song Oororam Puliyamaram in Paruthi Veeran, directed by Ameer and starring Karthi and Priyamani, and also appeared in the song sequence with an energetic performance. The number became so popular that it was played at almost every temple festival.

Riding on this fame, Lakshmi Amma performed with her troupe at village cultural events and temple festivals across the southern districts, singing and dancing to folk numbers.

In recent times, she had been suffering from health issues and had been resting at her residence in Kariyapatti, Virudhunagar district. She had also stopped attending concerts for the past few months. Amid this, she died yesterday due to ill health. Film personalities and fans have been offering condolences over her death.
