Chennai
The road connects this part of the city with various areas, including Koyombedu, Vadaplani, Mogappair West, Perambur and Ambattur Industrial Estate. The road is dotted with various commercial establishments but lack a proper parking facility. Several retail brands along the stretch see a good number of customers in the evenings. Motorists coming there park on the roadside, further reducing the width of the road.
“Motorists encroaching the road is a major problem at the junction on 27th Main Road. This narrow stretch is being converted into a parking lot for two-wheelers. This has become an inconvenience for residents and motorists,” said a resident. Residents have demand for better management of traffic and stringent measures to curb parking of vehicles along the stretch.
“Eighteenth Main Road has no median to regulate the flow of traffic. In its absence, motorists are not sticking to their lanes. The smooth flow of traffic is often obstructed by bikers plying in the opposite direction. Two-wheeler riders rampantly flout traffic rules, giving a tough time to pedestrians,” said a commuter.
An officer from the Chennai Traffic Police Department said, “We took stock of the situation. It is free from encroachments except for the vehicles parked on the roadside. There are traffic cops deployed at the entrance of the road. We will conduct regular patrolling to curb the practice of parking along the pavements.”
