“Earlier, the garbage would not be cleaned for four to five days. We had complained about it but no action was taken to remove it. Now, it has become much worse in the recent past. The garbage bin is full and overflowing, covering the area around it with waste for over two weeks,” said Silpa R, a staff at the Olympia Tech Park.

Demanding action against the officials concerned for not ensuring cleanliness, Jopin K, who works in a tea shop said, “The stench here is unbearable. Every morning, we are welcomed by it. However, no measures have been taken to clean the trash for so many days. Many of our customers bring it up when they drop by.”

Adding to the trauma for those working there and passing by, the cows and dogs that feed on the trash serve as an added menace. Recalling her experience, another local resident said she had to face the wrath of a cow as she was walking towards the main road while returning from work last week. “If the trash is removed from here, these animals will not gather there,” said another employee at the Tech Park.

Maintaining that they have a cleaning agency specifically for the area, R Bharathi, the State Industries Development Corporation( SIDCO) Guindy branch manager, said, “We will ask the garbage cleaning agency to look into the matter immediately. However, keeping this particular area clean is one of the greatest challenges, as the public from various parts of Ekkaduthangal tend to throw their trash here.

Besides, they lack awareness on waste disposal. More often than not, the dustbin remains empty and trash is found in the area surrounding it.”

Simply adding a few more dustbins in the area does not seem to work, she said. “Awareness must increase on the need to dispose trash only in the dustbins,” she stressed.
