VOICES FROM TN ON HYD ENCOUNTER: Mixed reaction from women leaders of state parties

A section of women leaders, including DMDK treasurer Premalatha Vijayakant wholeheartedly welcomed the Hyderabad police encounter, but DMK leader Kanimozhi and BJP leader Vaanathi Srinivasan chose to differ by saying that the punishment should have been given by the court.

“There is nothing wrong in the police encounter. What was the mistake of the girl in the issue? Only if such stringent punishments are given there will be fear among those who try to commit such heinous crime against women,” said Premalatha.

The rape incident of a Veterinary Doctor in Hyderabad created a huge outrage across the country and four men were arrested in connection with the tragedy. The country woke up on Friday to hear the news of death of four persons by police encounter.

The incident evoked mixed reactions among public and politicians. DMK leader Kanimozhi said, “I cannot refuse the fact that the four have got the punishment, but it should have come from court. If the same punishment would have come from the court, people would have feared for committing the same mistake again.”

She also said that government should not commit such mistakes and it will pave way for several wrongs in the future.

Similarly, Vaanathi Srinivasan criticised the police encounter. “Police encounters happen when the accused try to escape from the clutches of police, but the incident creates doubt whether the Telangana government decided to go for police encounter only to water down the growing anger of public on the incident,” asked Vaanathi.

She also said that the best way to punish the accused is through the legal way.
