According to the police, traffic Sub-Inspector Govindaraj, who was involved in a vehicle check, near Mulluvadi Gate area, had intercepted a motorist for riding helmetless.

The two-wheeler rider, identified as Dinesh from Guhai in Salem, was asked to cough up a fine of Rs 200 for the offence. After taking the fine amount, the cop gave him a receipt, which curiously read as fine not paid.

Following this, a local man broke into an argument with the cop for issuing a fudged receipt without any mention of the fine amount paid. After this incident, which was videographed in a mobile phone, went viral, Salem City Police Commissioner T Senthil Kumar ordered an inquiry into the incident.

As the allegations against the cop were found true, the commissioner issued an order placing Govindaraj under suspension. An inquiry is on to know if other cops from the Traffic Department had forged receipts to swindle fine amount in the district.
