CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has emerged as the leading State in the country in patent registrations, accounting for the highest share of filings nationwide in 2024–25.

Of the 68,201 patents registered across India, the State alone accounted for 15,440 registrations, or nearly 23 per cent of the total.

The number marks a sharp rise from 9,565 patents registered in Tamil Nadu in 2023–24, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase. The State government, in a statement, said the sustained growth had positioned Tamil Nadu as a major force in intellectual property creation and research and development.

By securing the top position in patent registrations, the government said, Tamil Nadu had reaffirmed its status as a hub of intellectual capital. It attributed the achievement to a deepening research base, a strong industrial foundation and close coordination between academic institutions and industry.

Welcoming the trend, Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said the surge in patent filings reflected the State’s long-term investments in education, research, manufacturing and innovation.

He said engineers, researchers, students, MSMEs and deep-tech companies in Tamil Nadu were filing patents at an accelerating pace, indicating growing confidence in the State’s innovation ecosystem. The steady rise in registrations, he added, underscored the outcomes of consistent policy focus on strengthening research capabilities and industry-academia collaboration over the years.
