We are patriots; those who alter the Constitution are anti-nationals, says Stalin

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday strongly criticised Governor RN Ravi, alleging that he had lowered the dignity of the constitutional office by refusing to read the customary address prepared by the elected State government.

Replying to the motion of thanks to the Governor's address, moved by DMK MLA I Paranthamen, the Chief Minister said the Assembly viewed the Governor's refusal as a challenge to democratic norms. He pointed out that similar incidents had occurred for three consecutive years.

"This government functions to fulfil the aspirations of crores of people. As per convention, the National Anthem is played at the conclusion of the Governor's address. However, the Governor accused the House of not singing the anthem at the beginning of the address," Stalin said.

Rejecting allegations questioning the government's patriotism, the Chief Minister said no one needed to teach them about national pride, "We have immense patriotism. Those who attempt to alter the Constitution of this democratic country are the real anti-nationals, and the people are aware of it."

Following an appeal by the Chief Minister, the resolution was passed by voice vote for the motion. Ahead of the Assembly election, Stalin also presented what he described as the five-year report card of the DMK government, highlighting major welfare schemes and their reach.
