CHENNAI: In a bid to empower science teachers in government schools with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills, 10 TN government arts and science colleges were selected as training centres this year under ‘quality improvement of science education in rural schools’ scheme.

Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), under the Higher Education Department, has selected a college each in Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Madurai, Ranipet, Salem, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur and Villupuram for training.

A senior official from the Higher Education Department said, “Through this programme, science teachers in government schools from classes 6-8 will be well-equipped with the latest knowledge on the syllabus and advancements in science and technology.”

By focusing on both theoretical understanding and hands-on practical skills, the scheme aims to improve teaching quality and teachers’ ability to deliver lessons effectively. “Conducting training programmes annually ensures consistent and updated science education across 10 districts, fostering standardised science teaching methods,” he opined.

The scheme will also give improved practical teaching skills with emphasis on hands-on practicals allowing teachers to understand and teach scientific concepts more thoroughly. “It will also give increased student engagement and understanding. Teachers will be equipped with enhanced skills, and be better prepared to make science engaging and accessible to students. Teachers will benefit from continuous learning opportunities as well.”
