The cash haul was made when police following the ban on PFI were checking vehicles at various places, including the toll plaza. Meanwhile, police spotted a group of four loading some goods onto a lorry from a car at Govindampadi nearby.

Police caught all the four and a check of the vehicle led to the seizure of 48 bundles of Rs 500 totalling to Rs 14.77 crore being transported without documents.

As the quartet – Ishaq Ahamed (33) of Chennai, Wasim Akram (19) of Madurai and Nasser (42) and Salauddin (37) both of Kozhikode – gave contradictory replies they were taken to the Pallikonda police station for probe.

Investigations revealed that the cash was being transported from Chennai to Kozhikode in Kerala. SP S Rajesh Kannan rushed to the spot and conducted further investigations after which 4 counting machines were brought to the spot to count the cash. However, counting by Friday evening was still on as two machines broke down and only two were in operation. The four were arrested and further investigations are on.
