Funds for the project will be raised from legislator’s constituency development funds. Accordingly, each legislator will be contributing Rs. 15 lakh under the constituency welfare funds.
The School Education Department, in its order, said that a total of 2,448 government high and higher secondary schools were identified for the drinking water scheme.
Each reverse osmosis plant will be purchased at a cost of about Rs. 2 lakh. The government order further said if MLAs contribute Rs. 15 lakh from their constituency welfare fund, a total of Rs. 35 crore will be generated.
The water treatment plant will be having a capacity to produce 500 litres of water per hour. Sources from Education Department said that about ten lakh students will be benefited through this scheme.
The scheme will be implemented mid of this year. Accordingly, tender will be floated very soon to select an organisation, that would supply reverse osmosis plants. The organisation will also look after three years’ service maintenance.
“District collectors will be monitoring the scheme in their respective region. The drinking water scheme will be extended to other schools in the next academic year,” an official said.
Therefore, a committee, comprising senior education officers, will be constituted to identify schools for the implementation of the scheme. Government also asked primary and middle schools to make sure that adequate drinking water facilities is available for the students.
