CHENNAI: The Union Ministry of Railways has approved an experimental stoppage of the Tirupati–Rameswaram Express (Train 16779/16780) at Polur station, a move expected to significantly benefit daily commuters and improve regional connectivity in Tiruvannamalai.
Announcing the decision on Friday, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L Murugan, said the approval came in response to a long-standing demand from residents of the region, which he had recently taken up with Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
“Considering Polur’s proximity to major commercial hubs and its importance as a key boarding point for passengers, the Railways agreed to provide the halt on an experimental basis,” he said in a statement.
According to an official communication issued by the Railway Board, the stoppage will come into effect from an early convenient date, with instructions to closely monitor ticket sales and passenger response for review.
Expressing his gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and Minister Vaishnaw for their prompt response, Murugan said, “The decision will not only ease travel for thousands of passengers but also boost trade and economic activity in the region.”
