Meat sale goes online in Madurai

A first of its kind home delivery of meat products is now available in Madurai. This has come as a relief for meat consumers, who need not move away home to buy either mutton or chicken, especially in these sensitive times of lockdown.

A delighted consumer K Vinodh, from Madurai’s Arasaradi, said he was content with the price and quality of the meat delivered. After ordering through online food delivery app, required quantity of meat is delivered within 25-30 minutes.

Notably, this online meat market has come at a time when the price of mutton goes too high during this lockdown period, as butchers keep selling a kilo of mutton at a maximum of Rs 1,200 against the average price of Rs 800, said the consumer.

S Muthukrishnan, president of Madurai City Mutton Retail Merchants Association, said a kilo of boneless mutton is priced at Rs 800 and a kilo of boned mutton at Rs 700 for every consumer placing online orders.

The initiative was launched to avoid crowding and the risk of community transmission of the virus, and provide quality meat at a cost effective price, he told DT NEXT on Sunday. Muthukrishnan added that he tied up his mutton stall located at Nelpettai in Madurai with online food ordering platforms and started take away services.
