Man injured as country gun misfires

A two-wheeler rider was injured when a country gun carried by a gypsy (narikurava) went off accidentally and injured the person coming behind near Arcot in Ranipet district on Wednesday.

Police said that Shanmugam (38) of Sattur village near Arcot was returning home after dropping off his wife at the local bus stop. Riding in front of him, Murali (30) belonging to the narikurava community was travelling on a motorbike with the country gun slung over him.


When Murali’s vehicle was going over a speed breaker, the country gun was pointing behind and in that impact, the country gun was triggered and pellets of the country gun shot Shanmugam, who was riding behind Murali.


The injured Shanmugam who fell on the road from his vehicle was immediately rushed by passersby to the Arcot Government Hospital from where he was later shifted to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.


The Arcot police pulled in Murali for questioning and are investigating the case.
