CHENNAI: As the monsoon is vigorous over Tamil Nadu, rain is likely to increase in the next few days across the state. The maximum temperature in the state is recorded below normal and continues to remain stable.
“The cyclonic circulation over South Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala has been favourable for the state. It brings intense spells to the Western ghats (Nilgiris, Kanniyakumari, Theni, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar). The rain is likely to gradually increase in the upcoming days,” said a senior official with the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC).
When the cyclonic circulation moves from the state, there are chances for heavy rain over Northern districts of TN, including Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Erode and Thoothukudi.
“The rain brought relief from soaring heat across the state. Several districts of TN recorded the maximum temperature below normal. And it is likely to continue for the next few days as the onset of the northeast monsoon commences at the end of the month,” stated the official.
On Tuesday, the highest temperature was recorded in Pallayamkottai at 34 degree Celsius. The lowest was at Kodaikanal and Namakkal, 12 degree and 18 degree Celsius. In Chennai, it has decreased. The western stations reported 29 degree Celsius.
The RMC forecast, heavy rain is likely to occur over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruchy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts till Saturday. And the rest of the state, including Chennai, to witness light to moderate rains along with thunderstorm activity for the next 48 hours.
According to the RMC, as of 5.30 pm on Tuesday, Chennai - Meenambakkam received 14.2 mm rainfall, Pallikaranai 14.4 mm, Karaikal 13 mm, Dharmapuri and Kancheepuram 10 mm each.
