Following a tip off that banned gutkha items were smuggled from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai through Tiruttani, the local police began checking vehicle at various points on Sunday.
At one such check point near GR Kandigai, a minivan coming from Vellore to Tiruttani was stopped and checked. Inside the van, police found gutkha products worth more than Rs 1 lakh, and arrested the person who was driving the vehicle, identified as Sankar (22) from Vellore.
The police team seized the tobacco product, the manufacture and sale of which has been banned in the State. The vehicle was also seized, and Sankar was remanded in judicial custody.
