Forester’s body retrieved from Contour canal

The body of a forest watcher, who was swept away in Contour canal at Udumalpet in Tirupur was finally retrieved after a long search on Sunday night.

C Chandru, a native of Pudukkottai and posted in Udumalpet forest range, was part of a team involved in rescuing an elephant which slipped into Contour canal near Pollachi on Saturday. However, the elephant died and the rescue team members were trying to take out its carcass from the canal.

“The forest watcher unfortunately got swept away in the strong current. Despite a search, Chandru could not be found. The forest department again began the search on Sunday and managed to retrieve his body around night,” said an official. The carcass of the elephant was also retrieved.
